In "While the Billy Boils", Henry Lawson's first important collection of stories, there are several short pieces which Lawson called "sketches". Critics considered them fragmentary, not recognising that they constituted a revolutionary departure from conventional 19th century story telling. Lawson's 'On the Edgeof a Plain' is the classic example, in which Mitchel-the dominant voice in the sketches - explains to his mate the experience of returning home to the family after a long absence in the outback. It became so smothering that he broke his promise to settle down and left to carry his swag again. Lawson suggested that this freedom was illusory in spare deft prose, which 20th century critics would later compare with Hemingway.
They turn their unshaven faces away from the shadowy timber only to face the obscurely threatening 'wide hazy distance'.
